Being an aú natural organic minimalistic holistic naturalista has allowed me to flourish in so many ways; mind, body, spirit, and SKIN. My complexion has never looked better and the glow is real. My followers on my other social media platforms know how dedicated I am to only using all natural products that are either made by yours truly, or by other natural + ethical beauty brands, and always ask me to share my natural beauty routine. This without a doubt has been one of my most requested topics from just about everybody. I finally was able to condense it to one blog post (but more will come I make so many things lol).
I’ve been making my own beauty products for a while now, and I have come to realize that natural cosmetics are, and will always be, the truth, and work the best for your skin. You know exactly what you’re putting in it (you don’t have to worry about harsh/harmful ingredients) and you can cater to your skin type and meet your specific skin needs.
The skin care routine I am sharing with you today is a universal skin care routine that will help you to keep your skin healthy and complexion clear, smooth, bright, and even. Also helping to improve any of your current skin problems.
Also, always remember that although there are tons of beauty products that offer to improve skin problems, nature will provide the BEST FIX and solution for your skin. Natural treatments for skin give lasting results and are often way better than expensive beauty products and procedures. However, I do know that everyone is not into making their own products, so I will provide both homemade and store bought products.
Tatum The Naturaleza’s Aú Natural Skin Care Routine
I’m going to start with my nighttime routine first, because this is the most important. I like applying all my moisturizers, serums, and other skin goodies before bed so it can penetrate my skin all. night. long. Your skin will be super hydrated and plump the next morning. You will see later in this post how super minimalistic my daytime routine is and why.
#1. Facial Cleanser
This is the ONLY cleanser I have been using for the past two months. I am on my third bottle, which says a lot because I would always buy another cleanser before I was even close to finishing one. It’s PH balanced, making it soothing, purifying, and nourishing. It’s soap free, paraben free, sulfate free, cruelty free, non-comedogenic, and vegan. My favorite things about this cleanser is that it contains rosewater; a natural cleanser, toner, and astringent. Glossier is a company that wants to work with your natural beauty, and get you to a point where your skin is at it’s healthiest.
This DIY facial cleanser that I used to make worked wonders for my skin as well.
All Natural DIY Exfoliating Detox Facial Cleanser!
- distilled water (1 tbsp.)
- 1 cup castile soap (I used the lavender Dr. Bronner’s castile soap)
- activated charcoal (2 tsp)
- tea tree oil (3 drops)
- chia seeds
- vitamin E (1 tbsp.)
- frankincense essential oil (5 drops)
Mix all the ingredients together, store in a squeeze bottle, and use it in your skin care regimen to cleanse, detox, and nourish your face!
Why is exfoliating important? Your pores can get clogged (leading to acne), your tone can become uneven, and you can start to have textured skin. Textured skin is usually always caused by either sun damage (which can affect our skin’s collagen), using the wrong skin care products, and obviously poor exfoliation. I exfoliate twice a week, every Wednesday and Sunday. The days you choose to exfoliate don’t really matter, I’m just extremely OCD. Only exfoliate 2-3 times a week because over exfoliation can cause problems to your skin. One of my go-to exfoliators is the Nyakio Exfoliating Chinese Rice Powder. It’s all natural, ethical, vegan, and most importantly, BLACK OWNED! I use a few pumps of the glossier face wash and a dime sized amount of this exfoliator and cleanse and exfoliate simultaneously.
I also make an exfoliating facial scrub that’s super hydrating and moisturizing. If I’m using this scrub, I use it after I cleanse, not during.
Brown Sugar Facial Scrub!
- 3 tbsp. brown sugar
- 3 tbsp. manuka honey
- 1 tbsp. grapeseed oil
- 1 drop of an essential oil *lavender* of your choice (optional)
Like all exfoliators, this brown sugar facial scrub helps to remove dead skin cells from your face, gives you smooth skin that feels AMAZING, keeps your skin healthy, helps unclog your pores, hydrate and soothe your skin, and gives you a beautiful glow.
I use honey a lot in every facial scrub that I make because it is one of nature’s best moisturizers. Grapeseed oil is non-comedogenic (meaning it won’t clog your pores), unlike coconut oil, and is known to treat acne, tighten skin, help get rid of dark circles around the eyes, moisturize, reduce scars, restore collagen, and fight aging. Don’t that sound good??
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and place in a small air tight container.
How to use: apply this scrub to clean skin and massage using circular motions. Rinse off the scrub with warm water, and pat dry your face with a clean face towel.
#3. Face Mask
I used to do a face mask every night, but now I limit it to no more than 3 times a week. I saw better results when I limited the use of masks. I either use the Nyakio Purifying Mud Mask, or The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Skin Clearing Mask.
I have tons of DIY face mask recipes that you can check out in the beauty: skin portion of my blog. But my favorite mask of all time is my….
Rose Clay & Turmeric Face Mask!
You will be so happy with the way your skin will GLOW after the first use.
- Ground Turmeric (1 tsp): antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial & anti-aging. Helps w/ acne & skin brightening.
- Greek yogurt (1 tbsp.): lactic acid in yogurt dissolves dead skin cells, exfoliates skin, helps decrease wrinkles, and fights acne. (If you’re vegan you can use coconut yogurt, however it won’t have all the benefits Greek yogurt has on your skin.)
- French rose clay (1 tbsp.): removes excess oil & impurities/toxins from the skin, shrinks pores, improves blood circulation to the skin therefore producing glowing skin.
- Rose water (1 tsp): balances the skin’s PH & clears acne. Antiseptic, alleviates sensitive skin & evens out oily complexions by controlling sebum production, reduces inflammation, tightens pores, & helps to lighten hyperpigmentation.
- Honey (1/2 tsp): antibacterial, anti-aging, moisturizing, super soothing, and anti-acne.
Mix ingredients together until a smooth paste is made (if your mix is dry add more yogurt until you get your desired consistency) & apply to face & allow it to dry for 10-15 minutes and rinse off with warm water, and pat your face dry.
Toning is one of the most effective ways to maintain healthy, vibrant skin. Toner removes residue and preps your skin for the moisturizer by balancing the pH level of your skin.
When I was experiencing minor breakouts, I would only use The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Skin Clearing Mattifying Toner. It does exactly what it says.
Now that I am free of all blemishes, I use the Botanics All Bright Cleansing Toner. It is formulated with natural AHAs from the hibiscus plant. AHAs rejuvenate the skin.
I also have a great DIY skin clearing toner that I formulated myself.
Green Tea & Lavender Facial Toner!
What you need!
- Lavender tea
- Green tea
- Apple cider vinegar
- A small spray bottle
Green tea has oil balancing properties and unclogs pores. It also gives your skin nice glow.
Lavender tea has cooling and calming benefits which makes it perfect for inflamed skin.
Apple cider vinegar balances the skin’s PH.
How To Make!
- Heat 1/2 cup of water until boiling.
- It is important to use spring water for this toner, you don’t want to use water straight from the tap because it contains fluoride and other hard minerals that can be tough on the skin.
- Add in 1 bag of lavender, and 1 bag of green tea
- Steep tea until it has completely cooled
- Once cooled, add in 1 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar
- Transfer your toner into the spray bottle
Additional (optional) add ins: 2 drops tea tree oil, vitamin E oil (you can take a vitamin E capsule and use the liquid from it). This toner needs to be kept refrigerated.
#5. Face Serums + Oils
It’s important to add organic oils to your skin care regimen. Not only are they super nourishing, but super hydrating as well. I apply a few drops of each oil (rosehip, argan, and my DIY face serum) before I apply a moisturizer.
Rosehip and argan oil are two of the best oils for your skin.
Rosehip oil. Moisturizing, high in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, reduces inflammation, improves skin tone, reduces wrinkles, non-comedogenic, has healing properties, and contains vitamins A C and E.
Argan oil. Anti-aging. Rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids. It also protects skin from harmful UV radiation.
Both oils give your skin an exceptional GLOW!
DIY Facial Serum!
What You Need:
- grapeseed oil (2 tbsp)
- jojoba oil (1 tbsp)
- 5 drops of each essential oil: tea tree, frankincense, lavender, lemongrass
Grapeseed oil. Helps treat acne and scarring.
Jojoba oil. Clears clogged pores, dead skin cells, and sebum. It’s soothing and is an antibacterial.
Tea tree. Unclogs pores and has antibacterial and antimicrobial compounds that fight acne causing bacteria.
Lavender. Has antibacterial properties and aids in skin cell regeneration.
Lemongrass. Has antifungal, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties. It helps to shrink pores and form a barrier against harmful environmental stressors.
Frankincense. Is an anti-inflammatory and is considered one of the best essential oils for acne treatment.
#6. Jade Rolling
Jade rolling is an ancient Chinese beauty technique that’s been used for thousands of years for its beautifying and anti-aging affects. This is a beauty technique that I fell in love with the first time I tried it. I apply all my serums and massage them into my skin using a jade facial massage roller.
The benefits of jade rolling include:
- eliminates toxins
- tones muscles
- reduces puffiness and wrinkles
- reduces dark under-eye circles
- cools and soothes the skin
- stimulates blood flow to the skin
- tightens and reduces pore size
A moisturizer is something that I will probably always make and rarely buy. The only moisturizer I will buy if I ever needed to would be LUSH cosmetics’ skin drink. My favorite moisturizer thus far is my mango butter + turmeric oil healing face moisturizer. It only has 4 skin loving skin ingredients, making it affordable and easy to make.
Mango butter. Filled with oleic acid (a fatty acid that works to keep skin and hair soft and shiny), mango butter keeps your skin plump and youthful. It improves your complexion by clearing up any acne you have, and prevents future blemishes. It also reduces any scarring or hyperpigmentation that acne can sometimes leave behind. Also, if you have or know anyone with eczema or psoriasis, mango butter is their solution!! It’s a natural anti-inflammatory and it helps control and soothe their outbreaks!
Olive Oil. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants. It has the same healthy fats as avocado, and plumps and moisturizes the skin with a combination of vitamin E and vitamin A. Olive oil can soothe, smooth, and nourish the skin, helping you appear younger with a brighter complexion.
Grapeseed Oil. Grapeseed oil contains high levels of fatty acids and vitamin E. Vitamin E is the component that helps the skin stay smooth and firm.
Turmeric. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which reduce skin inflammation, pigmentation and blemishes. It has antibacterial properties, which help reduce acne, especially when used with other natural ingredients. & it has anti-aging properties, which help prevent and improve dry skin and wrinkles, thus slowing the process of aging to help your skin look younger.
How To Make!
Starting with the turmeric oil…
- In a small bowl, add 1 tsp. of turmeric powder and 3 tbsp. of vegetable glycerin (an oil purely derived from plants!)
- In a pan, bring water to a boil and place the small bowl inside (make sure the small bowl is stove top safe!! If you have a double boiler use that instead!)
- Heat the turmeric and glycerin for 15-20 minutes
- Strain the oil (if you SKIP this IMPORTANT step, you will have a sandy moisturizer)
Mango Butter & Turmeric Moisturizer…
- Whip the mango butter (3 tbsp.) *no need to melt it first it whips easily when it’s kept stored at room temperature
- Add the olive, grapeseed, and turmeric oil
- Continue to whip the mixture until smooth and creamy!
- Place in an air tight container
#7. Spot Treatment
My skin has been super clear lately so I haven’t needed to do a spot treatment in a while. But my go to has always been this one holy-grail essential oil right here… TEA TREE! I would dab a little on the end of a cotton swab and apply it directly on top of any blemish that I had and it would either be non-existent, or free of redness by morning.
My day time routine is super minimalistic and simple because I don’t want to wash and rid my skin of all the moisture and skin protecting + loving ingredients I applied to it the night before. I want it all to stay for the next day. I also don’t want to apply the oils first thing in the morning because it won’t be on long enough to penetrate my skin before it is impeded by the environmental stressors that are placed upon the skin as SOON as you step outside.
I always only use the hibiscus cleansing toner in the morning since I’m not actually using a facial cleanser.
#2. SPF + Moisturizer
If you don’t already use sun protection every day, now’s the time to start.
Glossier’s invisible shield daily sunscreen is a great SPF moisturizer that protects your skin and prevents sun damage.
We should all know that UV rays are harmful to our skin and can cause extreme damage, such as skin cancer. It’s super important to apply an SPF moisturizer DAILY. I follow this SPF with a small amount of my mango butter + turmeric moisturizer (you can follow this with any moisturizer you currently have).
#3. Rose Water Spray
I periodically will apply rose water facial mist throughout the day to keep my skin refreshed and hydrated.
I thoroughly enjoy making my own products and going the natural route, and would love for you all to do the same one day and buy all natural & ethical products!
I hope you guys enjoyed my all natural beauty routine ♥ Be sure to subscribe, there’s always more to come and I don’t want you to miss out!
